Singles Notebook – “Get-Real” Thoughts and Opinions from Jim “Senny” Senhauser
“Here’s a Little Productivity Trick I Learned Recently”
For those of you looking for ways to become more productive in your career or anything else in you life, I have a little trick I learned recently to help you achieve mastery and success in the things that really matter to you. I have tried it and it works amazingly well. In addition, it is so remarkably simple that anyone can do it.
Before I drag out the suspense surrounding this simple secret any longer, here is the key. It’s called your first hour of the day. What? What on earth does that mean?
Say you awaken at 7:00 a.m. What is your first hour of the day? Simple – it is 7:00 – 8:00 a.m. And if you arise an hour later, 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. is your first hour of the day. No argument there, right? Now, here is the essential point:
What you do during that first hour of the day will go a long way toward determining whether your day is as productive and successful as you want, especially as it relates to achieving your ultimate goals.
Let me explain further. It is all about starting and maintaining focus. For instance, if your goal is to hunt for a job, your first hour of the day should be diligently dedicated to hunting for a job.
If instead, you have a job and have a big project that will soon be due, you should apply yourself right away to that particular goal. Keep in mind, it doesn’t matter if you do your best work during that first hour, just that you direct your efforts toward those goals that now take on a prime importance to you.
Let me tell you, at first disciplining yourself to focus in this way will drive you crazy. You will be tempted to reach for the newspaper or your coffee, turn on the radio or go through your E-mail. You’ll be itching to read or watch the morning news or find out the sports scores. It is SO easy to want to do anything but work right away on your main goal.
So okay, go ahead and have your coffee or donut, but do it while you are working on your job hunt or major project. However, shut out all other distractions. You see, by applying your efforts during that first hour of the day toward accomplishing what your primary work or life goal is, you help set your focus for the rest of the day and for all the other days after that.
Certainly, some days you will be more focused and successful than others. The words will flow like water. Great ideas will jump out of your head. On other days, you may apply yourself in a more passive manner by simply reading about ways to write a better resume or develop a more dynamic business plan. You may listen to audios or watch videos to learn your craft. The important point is to apply those efforts to push the ball up the field toward the goal line you have established for yourself.
The main point is that by staying focused during your first hour of the day on producing solid goal-driven work, you will be amazed at how it carries over to the rest of the day and eliminates non-productive procrastination. In a year, you will have produced a solid foundation of over 300 hours of solid work up front. In doing so, you’ll have such a head start toward your goals that you are bound to be pleased in a very positive way with your own progress. What’s more, you may even find that those around you are absolutely astounded.
Here’s the other thing about this little productivity trick. It is embarrassingly simple to try. Tomorrow, just take the first hour of the day and apply it toward your goal. Then, do the same thing the next day and so forth.
As for me, I now wake up every morning and I write, research online or read – all geared to apply myself toward improving my Internet marketing skills. I doubt if that is the goal of many of you. Your personal goals are far too numerous and varied for me to even contemplate. Maybe it is online dating, gardening, cooking, job hunting, writing or filming videos. You can apply this habit to one set of goals for one period of time and a separate set of goals during another point in time. It’s like Doritos. You can always make more.
The essential point is that if you apply this little trick to goals that are important in your career or life you will have created your own little “Project Head Start.”
So go ahead. The first hour’s on me!

With everything going on, you simply can’t stay home this weekend. Why not make your weekend extra special by partying with other singles just like you? Good music, good food, great fun!
