Singles Notebook – “Get-Real” Thoughts and Opinions from Jim “Senny” Senhauser

“What Makes a Father a Dad?”

A number of years ago, I lost my father after he went through a rough five-month battle with cancer. He was just 64 years old, and I was only 27. The shortness of the process and the suddenness of the loss were devastating. I am sure that many of you have experienced similar losses that have stuck in your memories and hearts.

When I think about my dad, I don’t ever view him as some sort of perfect person. He was far from being a great business man or a beacon to the community. He was, however, honest, loving and ethical and had a good heart. Those attributes about him are far more important to me in how I view my life.

As I think about him, there are certain times and experiences that made my father Dad to me. I would like to share some of those about my dad and about dads in general. Here are a few important responsibilities that make a father a Dad:
1) A dad loves and respects his wife, the mother of his children.
2) He sets standards for his children to achieve, with some that aren’t too easily attained. In a way, he is the life coach for his children in helping them reach for their aspirations.
3) A dad loves his children regardless of whether they are good or bad, successful or unsuccessful or even disappointing in exceeding his hopes for them.
4) He teaches his children those secret skills of growing up like – how to skip a stone five times across the water, how to make a snow ball and build a snowman, how to bait a hook with a worm, how to play catch with a baseball and how to ride a bike.
5) A dad can also be stern when you do something you know is wrong. If you get in trouble at school, chances are that any punishment you’re given will pale in comparison to that dished out once you get home.
6) It’s a dad’s job to enforce the “no dessert until you eat your beets (lima beans, Brussels sprouts, etc.) rule.”
7) Dads teach their kids how to take care of the car in terms of maintenance and appearance and eventually how to drive. (Dads used to teach kids all the new models of cars each year, but that’s become a meaningless exercise in today’s world.)
8.) A dad teaches his children the value of a dollar, usually with the phrase, “You know, we are not made of mo…”
9) Dads hang out in basements, garages and attics, not parlors or sun rooms.
10) They are really great to wrestle on the living room floor with or for football tackling in the yard. Dads rarely hurt you like other big people do.
11) It amazes me that the older kids get, the harder it is to beat Dad at board games.
12) Dads are great to take you to baseball, football or basketball games or just to watch the games on TV together. And if you were ever fortunate enough to actually play some of those sports, as I was, there was no better feeling than having your dad say how proud he was of how you played.
13) A dad is a good sounding board when it comes time to relate to your first girlfriend. Respect, manners, responsibility, tell her how nice she looks – all from Dad.
14) Dads teach you the importance of getting a good education, and later, a good job. Those are two signs of self-respect. If everything doesn’t go smoothly, a dad can help you to figure our how to be more resourceful and resilient.
15) A dad often teaches you that you should not fight with other kids. But, if you or your family is being bullied, he says don’t ever hesitate to stand up for them.
16) A dad teaches you how to cook all those “man dishes” like TV dinners, Chef Boyardee Ravioli, frozen pot pies and grilled cheese sandwiches with Campbell’s Tomato Soup. Later, he teaches you to grill out hamburgers, brats and hotdogs.
17) Dads love dumb presents like razor blades, ashtrays and memo boards you made a school, and coffee mugs that say “World’s Best Dad.”
18) Dads are always there to piggyback you up to bed and make the monsters in your closet and under your bed go away. Dads make you feel safe in the dark or during storms.
19) A dad shares that last piece of pie with you, instead of taking it all himself.
And finally …
20) Dad taught me that even big boys sometimes cry, like when they get shots, or the dentist hurts them, or sometimes when they just hurt inside, or …

… When they think back to their own dad and how much they really miss him.

This Sunday, hug your dad in person, or if not, in your memories like I just did.
Happy Fathers Day!

Okay. So, you are not used to seeing the terms “Mexican” and “cuisine” in the same sentence, much less “gourmet.” Yet, in this sense, Chicago is different from most big cities. We have several excellent upscale Mexican restaurants.

This Friday, June 12, join us back in the city with a cocktail and dinner party at the beautiful new restaurant from the same people who own Fonda del Mar. This new sister restaurant called FDM Mexican Cuisine and Lounge is more elegant AND upscale. FDM is located in the North Center neighborhood, at Lincoln Avenue at Byron (near Sola and the Irish Bistro).

The evening’s dinner will feature your choice from six uniquely delicious entrees: Tilapia over Spinach, Pork Chop in Mole Sauce, Shrimp in a Mojo Sauce, Chicken in a Spicy Salsa, grilled and marinated Mahi-Mahi, and Pork Shoulder in a Spicy Habanero Sauce. FDM is NOT your typical Mexican restaurant in any way, either in its drinks, its cuisine or in its elegant ambiance. Why not join us and check out the newest level of gourmet Mexican cuisine, in a chic, sophisticated atmosphere. Trying is believing.

This party is open to all singles (age approx. 34-60 years), regardless of past participation, so bring all of your friends.
Singles Notebook – “Get-Real” Thoughts and Opinions from Jim “Senny” Senhauser

“Dear God, I Am Doing the Best I Can. — Billy”

In my columns over the years, I don’t recall that I have ever talked much about practicing your religion to become a better single. Because of the variations in how different singles view God and worship and differences in religious teachings, it can be difficult to mold a coherent message without offending somebody. But, here goes.

I recently came upon the brief child’s prayer expressed in the title, which was supposedly uttered by a seven year old, frustrated by not being able to always do the right thing. The quote reminded me that sometimes, as single adults, even we often feel the same way. You and I pray for help to accomplish what we were meant to achieve. We pray to find answers to help us make the right decisions about our relationships and jobs and families. We ask for guidance in doing the right things and being the kind of “good” person that others will like and be attracted to.

But, can you and I go to God and honestly say to Him that we are doing the best that we can? Or, as singles, does our level of frustration, procrastination, depression and thoughtlessness too often stand in the way of that goal? Worse yet, do we ever ignore, make fun of or disparage other singles, trying to elevate our egos at their expense? If we’re honest, the answers to these questions are sometimes, “Yes.”

How can we put our religious precepts to work and become better singles in the process? First, most of the religions that I know emphasize kindness and empathy. Not everybody is on the same plane of singleness at the same time. Some are newly single and more awkward in new social situations and dating. Others have been single for a while, but still are not as gregarious and comfortable in crowds or unfamiliar situations. How do you respond to people like this? Do you avoid, ignore or make fun of them? Or, do you instead reach out and welcome them?

It’s not like you and I don’t know the right answer. An ounce of kindness and a dash of consideration both go a long way. But do we always do it as we should?

There was a time, before I started this club, when I thought that if I was kind to everybody at a party, whether I was attracted to them or not, that some would get the wrong idea. And, it’s true that some did. However, I also found that by being considerate and welcoming and listening to singles, both male and female, that I made a lot more friends. In addition, some of those who I didn’t think would attract me, I ended up being more drawn to as time went on.

There are three other lessons that I learned as I reached out and got to know all kinds of singles at parties, whether I was interested in dating them or not:

1) If you are nice, genuinely warm and outgoing and inclusive toward everybody, it creates a kind of contagious charisma and attractiveness that other singles (including some you’d like to date), are drawn to.

2) The person you meet and befriend might not be somebody that you want to date or vice-versa. However, he or she may have a buddy or girlfriend they’d be glad to recommend you to as a potential date. That is the best kind of social networking.

3) When you talk to and are friendly and kind with everybody at a party, even if you do not find a person that night that you want to date, you still will be a better, more datable person as a result. And you’ll feel better about yourself at the same time.

There are important corollaries to the above three lessons that can be equally valuable:
4) Those who come to a singles party and stand away from the crowd, being aloof, catty and somehow “above it all,” are generally seen not as being “special,” but as being self-absorbed, stuck up and rarely as attractive as they think they are. Pretending to be one of the beautiful people can only make you look foolish, vacuous and possibly self-delusional.

5) Mocking others in attendance, treating them with disdain or contempt is especially unattractive and small.

6) It takes only one thoughtlessly insensitive or cruel remark to spoil another person’s evening. They may eventually forgive you for this, but trust me, they will never forget it.

Thankfully, the negative behaviors I point out above are more common in younger adults who haven’t yet discovered that the world doesn’t revolve around them.

And don’t get me wrong; I am not suggesting that singles cozy up to anybody who comes across to them as inappropriate, dangerously needy or weird. Moreover, I am not recommending that any of you put on acts of phony charity. I am suggesting a transformation in authenticity as to who you really are and how you treat others.

In the end, the religion that I am suggesting for you and all singles to practice is that of the Golden Rule – “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” In more modern parlance, “Treat others the way that you, yourself would like to be treated.”

Now go forth, have fun and get to know each other, and prosper.

*******
I hope that you decide to join us in Chicago this Friday night. At FDM you’ll savor delicious upscale Mexican cuisine in elegant surroundings and also find that our parties are a great way to meet and get to know other singles just like you. What could be better than mingling, eating, drinking and getting to know other singles — all while having a terrific time?
Singles Notebook – “Get-Real” Thoughts and Opinions from Jim “Senny” Senhauser

“Is the Guy a Sentimental Sap? A Dozen Movies to Bring a Tear to His Eye”

Often you hear women talk about wanting to date a guy who is in touch with his feelings and not afraid to express his emotions. Still, guys don’t often sit around blubbering over tear-jerker movies, at least the ones that women do. Guys have their own set of movies that touch the soft inner core of their rough exterior.

What better way to address this issue than to create a roster of my top dozen movies that could bring a tear to even the manliest guys (in no particular order):

1) Saving Private Ryan – (1998) Starring Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Tom Sizemore, Adam Goldberg. In Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece about the horrors of war, both Tom Hank’s characters death and the words of Ryan as an old man revisiting Normandy (played by Harrison Young) are capable of wrenching tears from anybody.

2) Field of Dreams – (1989) Starring Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, Burt Lancaster James Earl Jones and Ray Liotta. An Iowa corn farmer hears voices that tell him to build a baseball diamond in his fields. When he does, the ghosts of Chicago White Sox players banned from baseball after the Black Sox scandal return to play. Also playing is the Ray Kinsella’s (Costner) father. The tearful moment is when Kinsella’s dad asks Ray if he wants to play catch.

3) One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest – (1975) Starring Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, Brad Dourif, Christopher Lloyd and Will Sampson. One of Nicholson’s finest efforts. A sociopath tries to get patients at a mental institution to rise up against a dictatorial nurse. The tear jerk moment comes when the Chief (Will Sampson) mercy kills McMurphy (Nicholson) after he’s been forced to undergo a frontal lobotomy.

4) Old Yeller – (1957) Starring Fess Parker, Dorothy McGuire, Tommy Kirk and Kevin Corcoran. Who didn’t cry at the end of Old Yeller? After all, the lovable dog had to be shot because it has contracted rabies saving its owners from a wild boar.

5) Good Will Hunting – (1997) Starring Matt Damon, Minnie Driver, Robin Williams and Ben Affleck. Will Hunting (Damon), a janitor at MIT, is also a mathematical genius. A psychologist (Williams) tries to help him channel his gift toward a better life. Will’s struggles to get close to Skylar (Driver), and his eventual coming to grips with his potential as a mathematician and a person, both lead to tearful moments.

6) Brian’s Song – (1971) Starring James Caan, Billy Dee Williams and Jack Warden. This made for TV movie told the story of Chicago Bears Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers and their friendship through Piccolo’s death from lung cancer.

7) Enemy Mine – (1985) Starring Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett, Jr. Enemies from different planets crash on an uninhabited planet after battle in space and must rely on each other to survive. Their loving friendship leads to a happy, tearful conclusion.

8) Midnight Cowboy – (1969) Starring Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight. A male prostitute and a sickly street savvy hustler become friends to survive in New York City. Eventually, Ratso the hustler (Hoffman) succumbs to T.B. in a tearful finale.

9) The Shawshank Redemption – (1994) Starring Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman and Bob Gunton. A banker is wrongfully convicted of his cheating wife and her lover’s murders and is sent to Shawshank Prison. In the midst of harsh, sadistic treatment, he befriends an older black prisoner (Freeman). The freedom and triumph of the human spirit that they eventually find is this masterpiece’s tear-generating moment.

10) Touched by Love – (1980) Starring Deborah Raffin, Diane Lane and Michael Learned. Though nominated for a Golden Globe, today this is the least remembered, though most tear-wrenching, movie of my choices. Lane plays a young cerebral palsy victim who is abandoned by her family. Her nurse (Raffin) encourages her to reach out to her favorite singer, Elvis Presley. No one can have a dry eye in this movie.

11) My Life – (1993) Starring Michael Keaton, Nicole Kidman and Bradley Whitford.
Bob Jones (Keaton) and his wife, Gail (Kidman) are expecting their first child. Bob discovers he has kidney cancer, which could take his life prior to his child’s birth. Bob decides to shoot a video to pass along to his child the wisdom his life and impending death have given him. Sort of the male version of “Steel Magnolias.”

12) E.T. – (1982) Starring Henry Thomas, Drew Barrymore, Robert MacNaughton and Dee Wallace. Okay, so maybe this Steven Spielberg classic is geared to kids, but there is a kid inside every fully grown guy. When E.T. tells the kids that he holds them in his heart, it does touch even the most stone-faced sap.

Honorable mention (not quite as tear rendering for guys): Rudy, Titanic, The Green Mile, Armageddon, As Good as It Gets, Big Fish, Ghost.

If a guy can sit through all these movies and not be moved to at least well-up, any woman may want to question whether he can have the empathy and sympathy required for a relationship.

I hope that you decide to join us in Oakbrook Terrace this weekend, and for any of our other upcoming parties. Singles Notebook – “Get-Real” Thoughts and Opinions from Jim “Senny” Senhauser

“The Problem that Nobody Wants to Tell You About (But Should)”

This column is about a taboo that most singles are reluctant to talk about. Yet this discussion may help some of you, possibly even saving you or one of your friends from a major health catastrophe. The problem is that this subject is so sensitive, that you may not want to share it with your buddy, gal pal, boyfriend or girlfriend because you do not wish to embarrass them.

What is the ultra-sensitive taboo subject? I am talking about halitosis, or more commonly, bad breath. For whatever reason, our society treats the mention of the problem to the person who suffers from it as some sort of sign of gross ignorance or dirtiness. Yet, in most cases, the offender or victim does not even know that he/she is suffering from the condition. Even the name we give it – bad breath – seems to indicate that the person has done something wrong, not that they could be sick.

What actually causes bad breath? Usually, it is not for a lack of brushing one’s teeth or using a mouthwash, despite what the “green phantom” may try to tell you. One common cause is accumulation of food on or between the teeth or on the surface of the tongue. Bacteria then grow on these food particles and produce a foul odor. Stringy meats between the teeth are the most common culprit.

If you carefully brush your teeth and tongue, alternating different types of tooth brushes to access difficult to reach areas, and floss nightly between all teeth, this problem should go away. However, if it is allowed to persist, it can lead to plaque build-up, gum disease, periodontal pockets of infection developing beneath your gums and more serious infections that can spread throughout your system. Do not think that you can get by only flossing occasionally or passing plaque buildup as a minor matter. It’s best to see your dentist for a cleaning and checkup twice a year.

Tooth decay is another important causative agent of bad breath, with bacteria from the decomposing tooth and its nerves yielding a very bad odor. This is especially dangerous for abscessed teeth. A sudden onset of foul breath can be an early indicator of a problem. A few years back, I dated a woman who suddenly developed bad breath well beyond the typical “morning mouth.” It took some courage on my part, but I finally had to tell her, explaining my concerns that it could be a serious infection. It did not go well. She was insulted, but we managed to smooth things over. A month later, she found out that she had a serious abscessed tooth.

Similarly, in my own case, I once had a period where I had a sour taste in my mouth. Nobody told me if I had bad breath, but it had to have been the case. As it turned out, I had a very severely impacted wisdom tooth that I simply did not feel. The untreated infection eventually actually ate a hole in my jaw bone and moved into my sinus cavity before it was discovered. It took more than six months for that hole to heal. So, pay attention to persistent bad tastes in your mouth and hope that your friends have the courage to tell you when something is amiss, breath-wise.

More common and less insidious bad breath comes from simple dryness of the mouth especially during sleep or after a night of drinking. Saliva kills bacteria. When that saliva is decreased and the mouth becomes dry, a layer of plaque accumulates on the teeth and tongue creating to a sulfurous “Morning Mouth” odor and taste. A glass or bottle of water (I like Perrier Lemon) near the bed will help keep morning kisses pleasant and give you a burst of energy as water-starved cells are re-hydrated.

“Smoker’s Breath” comes from the accumulation in the mouth and lungs of nicotine, tar and chemicals from cigarettes or chewing tobacco, or from irritation to your mouth, gums or lungs. The surest remedy is to quit. The second best is to brush your teeth and rinse your mouth often.

Allergies and sinus infections (allergies are in fact the most common cause of sinus infections) also can affect the pleasantness of a person’s breath. The postnasal drip that they create can drain onto the back portion of a person’s tongue. Like other bacteria, this discharge can have a foul smell and sour taste. These bacteria combine with others in the warm environment of the mouth to yield even worse breath. If the unfortunate sinus infection sufferer has stuffed up nasal passages, he’ll likely breathe through his mouth, making the bad breath all the more noticeable.

While most common breath odors are related to bacteria accumulation in the mouth, untreated medical conditions can also cause bad breath. If your oral hygiene is good and your teeth are healthy, conditions to look for include: acid reflux, bronchial infections, stomach ulcers, liver or kidney problems, and stomach and intestinal issues. Get a thorough checkup from your doctor to identify the likely culprits.

As I mentioned earlier, in our society, it is usually quite difficult to tell somebody that they have bad breath. However, my purpose in sharing this brutally frank information is to emphasize the fact that bad breath is caused by bacteria, often with the potential for great hazard if they are not properly treated. So, if you have a boyfriend, girlfriend or family member with persistently bad breath or who suddenly develops a strong case of it, care enough to diplomatically tell them. Any momentary embarrassment you or they may feel, will pale in comparison to the help it might do.

“To Choose Your Ideal Date, Why Not Put Together a Menu?”

Sooner or later, most of us as singles decide to go after our dream date, match, or soul mate. The challenge is that most of us approach that task with little forethought for the type of person we’re looking for. What qualities are we seeking? Where are we likely to find somebody who has those facets to their makeup and personality? We prefer to “play things by ear,” rationalizing that we will know it when we see it.

The first key to our search is to adopt an abundance mindset. In so doing, keep in mind that there are more than 300 million people in the United States with half of those being the gender you are seeking. Even in Chicago, which has 200,000 more men than women, there are plenty to choose from. But where and how do we start?

The easiest way to get your pursuit started is to go sight seeing. Take a drive to the mall on a weekend afternoon or sit along Michigan Avenue or in front of the Thompson Center downtown or near the bike path just off the Oak Street Beach. Plant yourself there and just take some time to people watch.

Take note of all the people who pass you by that might be attractive to you in a relationship. In your thoughts about them, what is it that makes them appealing to you? Write these characteristics down. Keep in mind that without getting to know the people who attract you, the attributes you assign to them are based more your inner thoughts than reality. Still, the hundreds of people who pass you by, of which you’re likely to find at least several dozen who attract you, serve as the catalyst to build your menu of positive, attractive characteristics. It also puts you in an abundance mindset, so that you won’t complain that there are no good men or women left.

Your next step is to build your menu listing of attractive criteria. Yep, actually write ‘em all down. Why not make yourself a spreadsheet divided into six columns – five narrow columns and one very wide column. This is a key part of the process. Don’t rationalize that you can get by with only a mental spreadsheet. Label the first narrow left column “Must Have.” Next to it, the second narrow column is “Nice to Have.”

The “Must Have” column is where you jot down the characteristics that you absolutely must have in a partner and a relationship. It’s your choice, but things like trust, affection, intellectual curiosity, confidence and a belief in God are on my menu.

The “Nice to Have” column is where your preferences are listed. These are things that you would ideally like to see, but those that are not absolute necessities. This listing may include things like personal habits, physical characteristics, job, pets, cooking skills, handyman skills, dancing ability or sports enthusiasm. It’s up to you what characteristics are desirable versus those that are absolutely necessary. You may find that, based on the entire person, some characteristics shift from column to column as your evaluation process progresses and becomes more well-defined.

The third narrow column on your sheet is your “Neutral” column. This is for characteristics that don’t matter one way or another for you. It is not that you do not care; it is just that you are not passionately attached to them one way or another. For me, hair color precision is not a defining characteristic. As long as her hair color is one that’s found in nature, that is fine with me.

The fourth narrow column is for “Wish to Avoid” characteristics. These are not absolute turnoffs, but are things you prefer not to have to deal with in a relationship. Some examples might be a date too newly divorced or widowed, or with difficult child issues or job or financial challenges. Depending on the circumstances, you might be able to overlook these issues, but you would prefer not to have to.

The final narrow column on your spreadsheet is – you guessed it – the “Dealbreakers.” Another name for this column is the “Absolutely Cannot Tolerate” menu. For some, it is things like smoking, excess drinking, drug use, religion, fidelity or lying. For others, it can be more mundane issues like height, weight or pets. You decide what you can or cannot tolerate.

So, now you have five narrow columns where you have listed characteristics that are either necessary, nice to have, neutral, prefer not to have or intolerable. It is entirely up to you what characteristics go in what columns. You may, however, want to consider things like favorite activities, physical exercise, religion, politics, finances, job, physical characteristics, personality, intelligence, education, morals and ethics, general lifestyle, passions and affection in your assessment. Importantly, it is how you define each of these that is crucial to your success.

Which brings us to the final wide column on your spreadsheet – the “What It Looks Like to Me” column. Here, you actually define each word according to what it looks like in practice for you. What is “believes in God”? Does that mean Christian, Jew, church-goer, fundamentalist or casual believer? Does a dog lover sleep with their pets or just like to play with them? You define the precise meaning of each word.

Now, if you have done your homework, you should have created a menu that likely covers a few pages of commentary on what you would like the “Catch of the Day” to look like for you. If so, you have a thought process outlined to evaluate possible mates that you meet in person or online. In addition, you can thoughtfully express what you are looking for in life and a relationship.

*******
I hope that you can join us for all of our upcoming parties. Why not start with this weekend’s excitement and fun from the starting gate to the finish line for our “Singles Race Day and Tapas Feast.” It is just one of the many way to meet, and get to know other singles just like you!

Singles Notebook – “Get-Real” Thoughts and Opinions from Jim “Senny” Senhauser

“7 Secrets to Finding that One Person Who’ll Make You Happy”

Singles sometimes tell me the one of the main reasons that they come to a singles event or join a singles club is that they are looking for that special man or woman who will make them happy. Certainly, we all can relate to that sentiment.

Well, I have good news for those “seekers” and for you. I have done some research and developed a set of “7 Secrets to Finding that Person Who’ll Make You Happy.” I know you will find this information valuable, just as I know some of you may be skeptical. But in my more than 20 years of working with singles organizations, I can assure you that these approaches work. So, here is a listing of my secrets for you:

1) Look for someone who wants to pursue meaningful goals in their life. While a number of people look for ways to boost their wealth, acquire more stuff, gain fame or improve their appearance, these accomplishments generally only lead to fleeting happiness. Having more far-reaching life aspirations generally is more fulfilling and in the long term will provide greater, more lasting happiness.

2) Find that special person who lives in the moment. Too many singles dwell on past achievements, glories or mistakes. In doing so, they fail to appreciate the beauty of today or to drink in all its wonder. Others are so preoccupied with building for the future that they live for that day when their “real” life will begin. Because of that, each moment in the “now” is treated as if it were merely part of a “practice round” for the future. We only get one trip around the track and most of us are passing the 250 – 300 meter market on a 400 meter track.

3) To find that person who makes you happy, it helps to look for somebody who is upbeat, positive and happy themselves. Do they count their blessings, or instead always look for the negative side of life and the things in it? Is the person cognizant of their strengths and the positive impact they have on others? Are they confident and resourceful even in tough times? Do they find pleasure in seemingly insignificant day-to-day occurrences or things?

4) Look for a person who develops and nurtures meaningful relationships. Does he or she have some close friends to share experiences, joys and sorrows with? Is this special person considerate of his/her family and do they have good communication and empathy? Does this special single practice kindness and generosity toward others? Do they listen well?

5) Look for a man or woman who is active and resourceful, with a sense of “get up and go,” instead of simply hoping things come to him or her. Find a doer that gets things done, not a sewer that hopes that things eventually flow toward him or her.

6) Try to find a person who doesn’t keep pouring over the menu of life endlessly trying to make the best possible choices and dwelling on the ones he or she did or did not make previously. Life is not a matter of making the best possible selection every time. It is a matter of making a well thought out choice and then, through your commitment and passion, making it the best possible one for you.

7) To find that one special person who can make you happy, you need only look in the mirror. I want you to read back over the previous six approaches I have outlined. If these describe you and the journey you as an individual are now on, then you are well on your way to happiness. The real key to happiness is not finding the right person, it is being the kind of person that somebody special would like to find and enjoying yourself and your life along the way.

In my analysis above, do I say that finding a special guy or woman is not an important part of happiness? Not at all. But you can’t ever expect to find in some other person the happiness that you cannot find in yourself. Nobody else can make you happy, and it is certainly not their responsibility.

Instead, become a cheerful, fulfilled and self-sufficient person first, the kind who can attract a similarly near-complete partner. Then, use the positive charisma that this creates to develop a mutual attraction and a relationship where you each add immensely to each others’ happiness. It’s easy to see the advantage of a mutually beneficial relationship like this, rather than a co-dependent or one-sided symbiotic connection with one person consistently trying to draw their joy from the other.

Finally, keep in mind that happiness must be found in the journey, not the destination. Think about the naïve young bride who dreams her entire life about her perfect wedding. The day comes and the beauty and happiness are everything she hoped for. Then, the honeymoon is terrific. But after that, unless she is far wiser than her years, how does she remain happy for the next 50 years? She, and you and I all need to find that illusive happiness gene in both ourselves and in life’s journey.

It is time to take those first steps.

*******
I hope that you decide to join us this Saturday for our fabulous cocktail party and dinner party on the patio at Fiorentino’s. What better way to meet, and get to know other singles just like you!

Singles Notebook – “Get-Real” Thoughts and Opinions from Jim “Senny” Senhauser

“A Dozen Lessons We All Can Learn from Mom”

Once again this weekend we will celebrate Mother’s Day, a day set aside specifically to honor the loving care, hard work, character building lessons and wisdom of one of the two most important women in a man’s life. Many of you will be commemorating this special day with your mothers, and some more of you will be getting together with your loving children as they honor you. What better time to reflect on the impact that our mothers made and continue to make on our lives. It’s also an ideal time for any of you who are mothers to ponder the impact you have on your kids.

Any of you who know me well are likely aware that my mother passed away in 1999. Jean Senhauser had grown up in a small, dirty industrial town in southeastern Ohio. Her father was a foreman in a sewer pipe factory, and her own mother was a cancer victim when Mom was just 15 years old. These circumstances forced her to grow up quickly. She worked hard to help put her brother through college. Sadly, my uncle was killed in a blast aboard a sabotaged ship during World War II. Though Mom did not go to college herself, her natural talents and creativity allowed her to turn a bolt of fabric and a few pins into fully fitted slipcovers for a couch in a single afternoon.

My mother worked well into her 70s, first as a hat maker, and later as tailor and clothing sales person. During World War II, Mom made hats for women in Los Angeles. She had actresses Shirley Temple, Gracie Allen and Barbara Rush among her devotees. Because she was honest with her clients and did not sugarcoat anything, Mom had many repeat customers. While she appreciated style and quality, she always remembered the value component in her work from her blue collar roots.

Mom’s philosophies on life today seem simple and somewhat homespun, but especially in this economy are extremely relevant. I often think back about Mom and how her teachings shaped who I am today. Here are a dozen her best life lessons:

1. Be sure to always tell the truth. When it’s hurtful to someone else, try to say it in the least hurtful way. Keep in mind that lies always hurt more than the truth (and eventually catch up with you). Also, there are usually three sides to each story – your side, the other guy’s side and the truth (generally somewhere in the middle).

2. If you do something thoughtless or hurtful, you’d had better be the first to admit your mistake and say, “I’m sorry.” It will make you a bigger, not a smaller person.

3. You shouldn’t ever be afraid to express your feelings and to tell somebody that you love them. However, before you do, be sure that you do really love them.

4. If you are feeling blue, you can always dance. It is tough to not feel like smiling when you’re dancing. (Mom even won the dancing contest in her nursing home).

5. Being independent does not mean that you don’t depend on other people. It just means that you think for yourself and can take care of yourself if you need to. True independence and security come from knowing you can count on your abilities, intellect and character to help you get through tough situations.

6. If you disagree with somebody, try to do so without being mean or contemptuous. Just because two people disagree does not make one right and one wrong – it just means they disagree. Don’t be a bully and pick fights; but don’t ever be scared to fight if you need to. The guy with the biggest mouth is likely not much of a fighter.

7. Always try to be creative in everything you do. You can’t ever expect to stand out if you just do the same things in the same ways that everybody else does.

8. Always demonstrate good manners, especially around a lady. Open her door; help her on with her coat; and push in her chair when you seat her. You do this not because she is a lady, but because you are a gentleman. More often than not, men who exhibit good manners have respect for others.

9. Speaking of respect, if you do not first show yourself respect, don’t expect anybody else to.

10. Don’t ever be ashamed of who you are and where you came from. Just because somebody else came from more wealth, is smarter or has more power than you do, does not mean that they have more class. Regardless of the circumstances, always do the classy thing.

11. Trust is the most important element of any relationship. If you cannot trust your partner, how on earth can you ever marry ‘em?

12. Your friends are the kind of family that you get to choose for yourself.

This Sunday, those of you like me, whose mothers have passed away, may be faced with some of the same emotions that I will again experience – a sense of loss, but also of gratitude for the time that I had with Mom. And I remain thankful for the lessons that she taught me that still positively affect me today.

*******
I hope that you decide to join us tomorrow evening for our fun cocktail party (with passed hors d’oeuvres) and listening, singing and perhaps even some dancing to live music from not one, but TWO piano players. What a great way to meet, and get to know and laugh with singles just like you!

Singles Notebook – “Get-Real” Thoughts and Opinions from Jim “Senny” Senhauser

“Why Do We Celebrate Cinco de Mayo Anyway?”

This Saturday, as we have for several years, our club celebrates Cinco de Mayo. Many of you know this holiday as a celebration but are likely not sure what it commemorates. Many Americans think it is the Mexican Independence Day. That is not the case. Mexico declared its independence from Spain on September 16, 1810.

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of the Mexican army over the invading French army at the Battle of Puebla, 52 years later, on May 5, 1862. Unfortunately, the Mexican army was eventually again defeated when the French reinvaded. However, the Cinco de Mayo (Fifth of May) came to symbolize Mexican patriotism, pride and unity. The Mexican state of Puebla naturally celebrates the holiday, as do some larger Mexican cities.

However, in recent years, the emphasis of Cinco de Mayo has shifted from its original purpose. It has now become a much more commercial reason to eat, drink and celebrate, especially in the U.S. It is safe to say that Cinco de Mayo is probably more universally popular in the U.S. than it is in Mexico. In effect, it has been transformed Hallmark-style into the Mexican St. Patrick’s Day. This transition has been fueled by the growth in popularity in this country of the Margarita, Corona and Dos Equis beers and Mexican and Tex-Mex food over the course of the past 30 years.

So, whether you celebrate Cinco de Mayo because of its intended purpose or for the lively commercial holiday it has become, what does it matter? Just enjoy it.

“How in the World Does a Flu Outbreak Get Started?”

No doubt many of you have been reading the past few days about the Swine Flu outbreak and wondering what it is and how it got started.

Unfortunately, Swine Flu, just like most regular strains of influenza, is an environmental disease, in this case a “zoonotic” disease. “Zoonotic” means that it is one that moves and mutates from animals to people. How does this happen? Unfortunately, it is usually the result of third world conditions of sanitation and proximity of people to animals.

Most strains of influenza begin with chickens or other fowl which unfortunately are virus-prone. The viruses that these birds carry are not often directly transmittable to humans. However, they can be transmitted to pigs, especially because of questionable sanitation practices. The viruses then genetically mutate in the pigs and may take on a form that can indeed be passed along to humans.

Once the virus gets into humans, it can mutate further, being passed from person to person through sneezing or touch. Increased globalization only exacerbates the problem, by making any virus difficult to contain geographically.

The best ways to deal with the Swine Flu are the same as with any virus:

- Get lots of sleep, exercise at least moderately and drink plenty of water (to keep your lymph system and kidneys operating).

- Wash your hands or use a sanitizer frequently. This is especially true if you have been in public places where you’ve touched doorknobs, shopping carts or baskets, railings, office equipment or been around small children.

- If you get a fever with sneezing, diarrhea and/or vomiting, see a doctor and don’t go to work.

World wide, the challenges of stopping these diseases are much more difficult. Over-population and poor sanitation and animal practices are rampant. Swine Flu is not the first of these possible pandemics and will surely not be the last. We just have to make sure that, as a country, we are prepared to deal with any outbreak quickly and resolutely.
Singles Notebook – “Get-Real” Thoughts and Opinions from Jim “Senny” Senhauser

“After 40 Years, Earth Day’s Promises Remain Largely Unfulfilled”

Today, all of us in the United States celebrate the 40th Earth Day. I was involved with the original Earth Day in 1970, while I was a college student. Back then, it was an educational event and student-led demonstration initiated by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson. More than 20 million people, mostly of college age, participated. Shortly thereafter, the Environmental Protection Agency was founded.

There was a time when today’s anniversary would have been major news. Given all the other priorities we have right now, for most people, unless they have grade-school age children, the event probably would pass by unnoticed. In today’s complex world, concern for our environment takes a back seat to a variety of other issues.

Back in 1970, Earth Day was hailed as the beginning of a new consciousness toward our environment and the very future of our civilization. Sadly, it remains a promise that is largely unfulfilled. Today’s environmental policies continue to be based on the idea that our corporations and people should continue to be allowed to pee in an unlimited environmental punchbowl. The premise is that our supplies of water and air are large enough than it won’t affect our health and quality of life. It’s laughable.

Unlike 1970, environmentalists today are often not thought of as looking out for our well-being. Instead, they are portrayed as reasons for lost jobs, toadies for Al Gore or wild-eyed protectors of spotted owls or some other obscure animal species. Too few of us look at the disappearance or gross mutation of smaller species as the proverbial “canary in the coalmine” of our own well-being. A few media blowhards even revel in marginalizing the implications of poor environmental stewardship by calling out the environmentally conscious as being mere “wild-eyed tree-huggers.”

Have we made some progress since 1970? Sure – but not nearly enough. Here are a few thoughts on major areas of concern:

Diseases caused by pollution and contamination - As farming practices become more industrial and global, this is one of the scariest areas for concern. Peanut butter with salmonella and vegetables with E-coli are minor examples. There are simply too few FDA and USDA inspectors and too many companies that cut food safety corners. U.S. farms, especially larger ones, use certain practices that lead to the contamination of our waterways (and water supply) with raw animal waste.

In Chicago, beaches are closed every summer, from time to time, especially after a major rainstorm. This is due to “organic” pollution (their term for untreated sewage) in Lake Michigan. That is, of course, the same Lake Michigan from which we draw our drinking water. It’s also the same lake where BP dumps some industrial compounds and mercury and drug companies have also deposited their pharmaceutical waste.

Global Climate Change – Once derided as an unproven theory, most scientists today agree that this issue could be the most important for the future direction of our climate. Increases of a few degrees in the temperature of the planet, caused by a rise in worldwide industry and transportation-related carbon dioxide emissions, can lead to catastrophic changes in weather patterns and severity, oceanic water levels ocean currents, and tropical climate illnesses like malaria, West Nile virus, cholera, encephalitis and dengue fever.

Excess chemicals in our food and water supply – Too many antibiotics, drugs, hormones, pesticides and chemicals are routinely injected into or sprayed onto our food supply or allowed to drain into our water sources. Over time, ingesting these has created “superbugs,” – that is diseases and infections resistant to the major antibiotics. In addition, we all have pesticide residue in our bodies. Thankfully, organic farming is on the rise and new food ingredient and country of origin labeling has been adopted. Even more education is needed.

We’re still dependent on coal and oil – In 1970, we thought that by now solar power and wind power would be major sources of fuel for the U.S. Up till now, we have treated the symptom and not the illness by concentrating mostly on finding new oil and gas supplies. In the new green economy, wind and solar farms are being given much needed investment and conservation is gaining higher visibility.

The EPA is grossly underfunded - Since the 1980s, Government cutbacks in the EPA have reduced the number of agents and EPA powers dramatically. As with the banking system, the government’s focus has been on industries policing themselves to arrive at best practices. This approach, one which allows the rabbits to guard the lettuce, is not likely to produce optimum or honest solutions. As a result, companies are not likely to push themselves hard, knowing that no one is watching. This leads to companies debating how much toxic sludge, poisonous mercury or PCBs they can put into Lake Michigan or our rivers. Why should they be allowed to dump ANY of these poisons into Lake Michigan or our rivers?

Has Earth Day’s vision been totally lost? The bleak environmental portrait that I have painted above doesn’t mean that there have not been some major environmental improvements since 1970. New house and building construction and renovation are increasingly becoming “greener.” This has a positive major impact on reduced energy consumption and the healthiness of the materials utilized.

Solid refuse disposal is improving. In the 1970s, glass, metal and plastic container recycling programs were largely unknown. Today, many landfill projects have become reclaimed land. In addition, hazardous chemical disposal and lead reduction and abatement initiatives have also shown notable progress.

Given the greatness of the original Earth Day vision, and the continued propensity of some individuals, corporations and politicians to want to get around the rules, hollow out the regulations or make the entire environmental movement ineffectual, the it’s a vision that remains largely unfulfilled. How this all plays out in the future depends on how vigilant and willing we all are to speak out whenever we encounter those who would dilute efforts to preserve or improve our environment. The quality of our planet and its future are up to us. In the end, environmental concern is not about spotted owls, but is instead about the quality and safety of our lives and those of our children and their children. Happy Earth Day!

Singles Notebook – “Get-Real” Thoughts and Opinions from Jim “Senny” Senhauser

“What on Earth Could a Single Learn from ‘American Idol’?”

I have to admit, I am one of these closet (no, not that kind of closet) weekly viewers of “American Idol.” Actually, I more like catch a little bit of the visuals over my left shoulder and listen to it while I’m at my computer.

It’s funny; I was totally disinterested in the show during its first season, which looks very amateurish by comparison if you see it now. But, I did come aboard part way through season two and have only occasionally left in the seven seasons since. I’m certain that some of you can relate to my “American Idol” viewing habits, while others of you are no doubt rolling your eyes in disgust.

Why do I like the show? Because “American Idol” does produce some genuine talents. Kelly Clarkson, the AI season 1 champion, has had a very successful singing career, having released four albums and captured a Grammy. Carrie Underwood, the season 4 champ, has probably had the most successful career so far. She has released two multi-platinum albums and was just named Country Music’s “Entertainer of the Year,” the genre’s top honor.

Even if a singer does not become the season’s Idol, the TV exposure assures them of a chance at a significant music career. Some may remember that Jennifer Hudson was eliminated from the competition in season 3 well before lesser talents. Chris Daughtry, who finished fourth in Idol’s fifth season, has had more success than all the other finalists of that year combined. Clay Aiken was the season 2 runner-up.

Well, what can we learn as singles from watching “American Idol”? What gems on life can we possibly take away from a singing contest? Here are some lessons that I think we all can draw from the AI contestants and how they handle themselves:

1) If you want to succeed, find what you are good at and don’t be afraid to fail while pursuing it. It is amazing at the number of people who hide their light under a bushel because they are overly worried that they will fail or embarrass themselves. I have been embarrassed so many times I cannot even count them. So what? The discomfort lasts a few minutes to an hour, tops, and then you move on. No biggie.

2) Learn to benefit from failure and constructive (and even non-constructive) criticism. The lessons of failure can be harsh, but in them they also reveal the paths to success. Moreover, pay close attention to the successes and failures of others. Then, do your best to analyze and figure out the specific elements of achievement and avoid those of failure. Try to put your individual interpretation of these success factors to work for you. Don’t copy, but adapt them, and make them your own.

3) Be true to who you are, but do not be afraid to extend your range and try new things. For years, I avoided Indian food, because I did not like the smell of it. Then I finally was encouraged by friends to eat it and became a major fan. A similar thing happened to me regarding country music and dancing. I came to like them, too. Both these adapted tastes did not mean that the core of who I was changed; it just stretched it a little further.

4) Take some creative risks. I’m not talking about being foolhardy, but trying to fit in all the time will only make you be forgettable. Even if people do not always like your unique approach, they may still admire your guts for trying it.

5) Perhaps the greatest lesson that we can all take away from “American Idol” is the primary element that the victors consistently have in common. The judges sometimes refer to it as artistry. What they really are talking about is the ability of the top contestants to take a song that is familiar and likely already comfortably implanted in most viewers minds and to perform it in a new and surprising way. I refer to this transformation as the “Wow Factor” or the “Aha Moment.” It is this talent that separates AI finalists from good karaoke singers.

As a single, you should try to take your desirable strengths and talents (i.e. cooking or dancing or fashion, not burping) and develop them in a way that sets you apart from the crowd in a positive way. Make yourself positively memorable.

Among this season’s finalists, Adam Lambert, an LA singer who’s part Freddy Mercury, Billy Idol and David Bowie, has been especially skilled at making familiar songs his own. His performances of Smokey Robinson’s “Tracks of My Tears” and Tears for Fears’ “Mad World” demonstrated that knack. Here’s “Mad World”: http://s79.photobucket.com/albums/j141/mjsbigblog/Top%208/?action=view¤t=adam-top8.flv

My picks for the top dozen American Idol performances of all time have that same “Wow Factor” incorporated into their genes. No doubt you have some of your own favorites. The videos for these 12 songs are all likely on You Tube. Enjoy ‘em all!

“Imagine” by David Archuleta; “Billie Jean” and “Hello” both by David Cook; “I, Who Have Nothing” by Jordin Sparks; “Funny Valentine” by Melinda Doolittle; “I Walk the Line” by Chris Daughtry; “Circle of Life” by Jennifer Hudson; “Bless the Broken Road” by Carrie Underwood; “Hallelujah” by Jason Castro; “Summertime” by Fantasia Barrino; “Over the Rainbow” by Katharine McPhee; “(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman” by Kelly Clarkson.
